Small Space, Big Impact

SpringHill Suites Charlotte Uptown

Charlotte, NC

Discovery

Following a prolonged break after the recession, hotel development in the uptown part of Charlotte was on the upswing. SREE Hotels was looking to expand into the area and acquired a site that was centrally located and within walking distance of just about every point in uptown. Though in an optimal location close to the Blue Line light-rail and Spectrum Center, it was a triangular shaped space only about a third of an acre in size. Such constraints presented quite a challenge for the design team to work within.

Creation

The plot of land’s unique shape shifted from a challenge to an asset forming the basis for the building’s unique shape. The tall, skinny, angular frame differentiates it from others in the vicinity providing a sleek, modern look. It was very important that this aesthetic was translated not only on the exterior, but inside as well through the hotel’s many design features. The hotel’s custom interiors were designed to be streamlined and echo the city’s light rail system. Small nods to industrial transportation can be seen throughout the space including the bar lounge meant to take on the vibe of a station diner. The top floor features a 3,000 square foot event space with two outdoor patio spaces capable of accommodating up to 250 people. Months after it began booking guests, the hotel was doing better than the owner’s projections.
